Why won't the mac work? I can't even reinstall the OS.Īny advice on how to fix this? The methods that worked (running the mac from the power outlet and resetting the SMC) only worked a few times. The battery is clearly powering the fan and disk and the charger light is amber so I know that is connected properly. I can hear the hard disk spinning so I think it works. I've tried accessing safe mode, disk utility (command + R + power button) and power cycling by pressing and holding the power button. I mistakenly shut down the device and tried turning it on with the SMC reset but all attempts have failed. Resetting the SMC worked once and made the device boot, but only once. The battery, hard drive and RAM seem to be fine. A friend put in new RAM as a test and that didn't help. Put in a new hard drive, still won't boot. I replaced the battery, still no luck, won't boot. When I press the power button for over 3 seconds and plug in the charger the fan and hard drive turn on.
When I press the power button for 3 seconds and plug in the charger at the same time the hard disk spins, but the screen remains off with no bootup.
I tried removing the battery and running it from the power outlet. When I remove the charger the hard disk continues to spin, so the battery clearly works. I can hear the hard disk spinning but the screen remains off and no booting. When the charger is plugged in and the mac is turned on the device makes a gentle whirring noise but the screen remains off, no bootup. The apple logo and the bootup sound don't appear. The battery is fully charged and it still shuts down. When I turn the mac on without the charger it makes a whirring noise, then there is a clicking sound and the mac turns off. I have an early 2011 13" macbook pro running OS X 10.10.5.
